About the Studio

Tullis Studio is a contemporary painting studio dedicated to the careful study and documentation of artistic process.

The studio is grounded in the belief that the process of making is inseparable from the work itself, and that artistic practice gains depth through careful observation, documentation, and reflection. Each painting emerges through an extended process of layered material study—recorded through writing, visual documentation, and ongoing studio inquiry—treating the evolution of the work as a meaningful record of time, perception, and experience.

Inspired by the landscapes, atmospheres, and ecological systems that inform the work, Tullis Studio seeks to maintain practices that are attentive to sustainability, material responsibility, and the preservation of natural resources. The values of the studio reflect a broader belief that creative practice should remain connected to the environments that inspire it.

Beyond the production of individual artworks, Tullis Studio is conceived as a space for dialogue and collaboration. The studio welcomes the exchange of ideas across disciplines and cultural perspectives, recognizing that artistic practice is strengthened through conversation, shared research, and collective exploration. Through future collaborations, interviews, and partnerships with artists and makers working in different mediums, the studio aims to foster a creative environment where diverse voices and practices can intersect.

In this way, TULLIS Studio functions both as a site of painting and as an evolving platform for artistic inquiry—one grounded in process, ecological awareness, and the belief that creative work can serve as a meeting place for ideas, perspectives, and stories.

Tullis Studio was founded by artist Mary Andrews, whose work forms the conceptual and material foundation of the studio’s practice.

About the founder

Mary Andrews is the founder of Tullis Studio, an interdisciplinary creative practice integrating painting, writing, and material research.

The studio takes its name from Andrews’ family lineage, reflecting a deeper interest in inheritance, memory, and the ways histories of place become embedded within personal and cultural identity. This relationship between lineage, landscape, and interior experience continues to inform the conceptual foundation of the studio’s work.

Andrews studied illustration and fine art at the University of the Arts London, where she developed an early interest in the structural relationship between image, narrative, and environment. This foundation continues to shape her interdisciplinary approach to painting, where visual language, material exploration, and philosophical inquiry intersect.

Working in large-scale painting and material-based abstraction, Andrews’ practice explores the relationship between landscape and interior psychological space. Her paintings are built through layered studies of oil, pigment, and surface, constructing atmospheric environments that evoke geological interiors, fields, and spaces of quiet containment.

Surrounded by expansive natural environments throughout her early life, Andrews developed a sensitivity to the atmospheric and spatial qualities of landscape—an influence that continues to shape the architectural language of her work.

Andrews currently lives and works in Southern California.
